About Us

At a time when many funeral homes are owned and operated by corporations, Elgin Funeral Home remains family owned and operated. In business since 1986, we feel strongly that we can better serve our community by focusing on family values rather than corporate profit objectives.

Following the death of founder and president Dick Williams in 2002 and the retirement of co-founder and funeral director Lawrence Matetzschk in 2008, Dick's grandson, Josh Hausladen, and his family are carrying on the time-honored traditions established by Elgin Funeral Home.

It has been a blessing and an honor to have served the families of Elgin and the surrounding communities for over 30 years. We hope you continue to find peace and comfort in knowing that our family truly values the trust and confidence placed in us during the most difficult times of life.

History

Elgin Funeral Home was founded in 1985. Dick and Gloria Williams, who owned and operated Williams Grocery for 30 years joined with four local businessmen including former Director of Newby Funeral Home Lawrence Matetzschk to provide Elgin and surrounding communities with an affordable and locally-owned alternative after the sale of Newby's to a national chain. Within a couple of years, two partners sold their interest to Dick and Gloria and their daughter, Linda. In the early '90s, the last partner sold his shares to current partner Billy Peel. After the 2008 retirement of Lawrence, the funeral home now continues with its third family member, Josh Hausladen, Linda's son and Dick and Gloria's grandson.

Josh continues to operate using the same principles of individual service and affordability that have characterized Elgin Funeral Home since its establishment in 1985. Incorporating new technologies, Josh began offering digital slide shows using family photographs that can be played during visitations and funeral services. We provide these memorial CDs for families to share together as a memorial keepsake. As soon as Josh began as Managing Director, the facility was given a major facelift in and out; including new furniture, fixtures and landscaping. Elgin Funeral Home has become a relaxing and peaceful environment where friends and family may comfortably gather together in their time of grief.

Josh's brother Matt joined the family business in 2010. Using his 20 years of expertise in the residential and commercial construction field, he played a major role in the renovation of the building and fixtures, which provides a more modern facility while preserving the intimate environment. He also assists with funeral services. Jamie Hausladen, Josh's wife joined at the end of 2010 to serve as Office Manager and assist in the family business in a myriad of ways.

We invite you to come by and visit with us during normal business hours, and please know that you are always free to contact us by phone or email at anytime. We look forward to meeting with the community and receiving feedback on how we can continue to serve you better for many more years to come.
