About Us

In the early to mid 80's a handful of corporations around the country, began a mission to consolidate as many family-owned funeral homes as possible. With the threat of competition no longer an issue, they began charging exorbitant rates and turning the American Funeral Industry into a multi-billion dollar market. It was during this time that the Newby Funeral Home fell prey to such acquisition. Lawrence and Marjorie Matetzschk (former funeral director at Newby Funeral Home), Dick and Gloria Williams (owners/operators of Williams Red & White Grocery Store), Bob and Kathryn Dumbeck (an engineer and a florist), and Eugene and Betty Ridings came together and founded Elgin Funeral Home with the desire to ensure Elgin and the surrounding communities would continue to have a family-owned and affordable option to funeral and cremation services.

Josh Hausladen, grandson of Dick and Gloria Williams, joined the Elgin Funeral Home in 2008, and immediately began implementing more ways to offer memorial options to the families we serve. In 2009, Elgin Funeral Home became the first funeral home in Bastrop County to offer an integrated website as well as video memorials, which could be played during services and online. Although Josh continually seeks out new and creative ways to serve, his true passion and calling has always been the amazing care of the deceased and their family.

Josh’s wife, Jamie, joined the family business in 2010. Jamie has been vital to the day to day operations of the funeral home, as well as being a kind and loving spirit to those in a time of need. In 2018, with the encouragement and support of Kathryn Dumbeck, Jamie opened a flower shop, The Flower Haus, located at 106 B Depot Street, in Elgin. Jamie’s gift for compassion and creativity has made Elgin Funeral Home a special place of solace.

In 2020, Josh and Jamie were blessed with an opportunity to renovate and update the facility. There were many discussions over the years, with the families we served, about how we could improve. We listened in earnest and incorporated as many suggestions as we could. Thanks to your suggestions, we are excited to remain at the forefront, providing compassionate service in a modern home setting environment.

We invite you to come by and visit with us. We are always available by phone or email too. We always enjoy meeting with the awesome folks of our community and receiving feedback on how we can continue to serve you better for the next 30 plus years.
