Shirley Landry

May 7, 1945 — September 24, 2020

Bastrop, Texas

Shirley Kay Landry, 75, of Bastrop, Texas, passed away Thursday morning, September 24, 2020.  Shirley was born the first of four children to John and Katherine Mitchell in Austin, Texas on May 7, 1945.  She grew up and attended elementary and junior high in Corpus Christi and moved back to Austin where she graduated from Austin High, class of ’63.  Shortly after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Charles Landry on July 6, 1963.

While growing up the oldest child, she often took on the responsibility of caring for her brother and twin sisters.  Her twin sisters were her best friends.  In her younger years, living in Corpus, Shirley spent a lot of time hanging out at the pier in Corpus Christi, roller skating and eating Frito pies.  When they moved to Austin, she enjoyed time with her family at an old Austin eatery, near granny’s house on Caesar Chavez, named Joes Café, where they would play the juke box, as they would dance and roller skate to the music.
Shirley was extremely crafty; in her spare time, she loved to crochet and made baby blankets, afghans, doilies, and stuffed animals.  She also loved making mums and garters during homecoming time for her kids, grandkids and anyone who needed one.  She was highly active in her children’s school activities.  She would often make chicken-n-dumplings for every tournament held at the school.  All the coaches, staff and referees would always talk about how much they looked forward to those dumplings.

She is proceeded in death by her husband of 45 years, Charles Landry; both her parents, Katherine and John Mitchell; and her sister, Karolyn Konarsky.

Shirley is survived by her three daughters, Katherine and husband Jeff Wilchenski of Shallowater, Shirley and husband Brent Aalsma of Troy, and JoAnna and husband Richard Brune of Cat Spring; her two sons, Charles Landry and wife Sheryl of Elgin and John Landry and wife Meredith of Georgetown; her brother, John Mitchell and wife Pam of Austin; her sister, Marolyn and husband Glenn Davis of Georgetown; twenty-two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

She will lay In-State at the Elgin Funeral Home on Sunday, September 27th from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM.  A Funeral Service will be conducted at the Elgin Funeral Home, Monday, 28th at 10:00 AM with the Reverend, Greg Long presiding.  Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
