Melody Yount

March 31, 1960 — November 7, 2021

Bastrop

Melody Ann Yount was born into this world on March 31, 1960, to Esker Earl Smith, II and Virginia Ruth Smith (nee Pettit), in San Angelo, Texas. Melody was the youngest of five children born to the couple.

Her father was a pharmacist, and her mother was a Registered Nurse. The family moved several times in her childhood, including Keller, and Bridgeport ,Texas, and then to Jasper, Arkansas, where she grew up on a beautiful farm tucked into the Ozark mountains. She decided to return to Texas after High School and put herself through college at Stephen F. Austin State University, in Nacogdoches, Texas.  She graduated Summa Cum Laude in Biology, having received only one “B” grade her entire college career. After graduation she began work in Pharmaceutical Sales for Merck. She enlisted in the United States Army and trained as a Medic at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.  During that time her father became terminally ill, and she separated from the Army to take care of him as he was dying.  After he passed away, she lived with her mother and successfully resumed her career in Pharmaceutical Sales with Rhone-Poulenc Rorer.  She then met her future husband at a social gathering after a scientific meeting at Convict Hill Restaurant in Oak Hill, Texas.  Steve Yount, a Flight Surgeon at Bergstrom AFB, proposed to her on Good Friday 1990, and they were married on October 6, 1990, at McMahon Baptist Church, Texas—despite a roaring case of Poison Oak contracted the weekend before the wedding.  They separated from the Air Force on July 4, 1991.  After an over one-month adventure traveling from Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, to Jasper, Alberta and back, she set up and managed Steve’s new practice in Bastrop, Texas on which began on November 4, 1991.  After a ski accident in Durango, Colorado forced her to step away from the practice to recover, the babies started to come.  First Elizabeth, born 3/24/ 1993, and then Lillian, born 6/14/1995. The years have sped by all too quickly, and the last 20 years have been fraught with health problems for her. She has faced each of her trials and worked as hard as she could to live as full a life as possible, bravely keeping her positive attitude, while living well through the good times.  On August 4, 2021, she was diagnosed with Covid-19, and succumbed to complications of that disease on November 7, 2021.

She is survived by her loving husband, Steve of Bastrop, Texas; two loving daughters, Elizabeth and Lillian, both of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Esker Earl Smith III of Mena, Arkansas, and Randy Kilian-Smith of San Antonio, Texas; and one sister Beverly Lohman of Austin, Texas. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, and by her brother David Smith.

She lives in the arms of her Savior, and we will see her therefore again.
