Lucia Lopez Cuevas, our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, passed peacefully, Wednesday morning of April 22, 2020, in Austin, Texas. Born in Robstown, she lived a wonderful life with her family. She was a caregiver to her siblings, as her family worked on the farm. Lucia later met the love of her life, Alejandro P. Cuevas in Petersburg, while working in the cotton fields, and the two were united in marriage in Plainview, in December of ’54. It was later in life Lucia realized her calling for helping others and became a nurses aid and worked in Petersburg. After her retiring from the clinic, she went on to further her career by going back to school and earning her certification to care for the elderly in New Deal. In 2002, Lucia and Alex retired and moved to Central Texas to be closer to their daughters, where they established a new home in Elgin. Living in Elgin, she had the love, support and energy of her children.
Lucia loved life and would light up a room with her joyful laughter. She would always be the first
to sing a hymnal or offer to give comfort in prayer. She had a very empathetic and nurturing
soul, which radiated throughout her personality. She was the one everyone went to for the best advice and hugs. Lucia had a passion for plants; her green thumb could recover any plant. Once healthy and thriving again, she would supplement her goodbyes to those who visited with the words, “Do you want to take home a plant?” She was very independent and
instilled her strong values, kindness, faith and gratitude in her family. She would always say,
“you have to have faith.”
Lucia is preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Alejandro P. Cuevas, both her parents, Guadalupe and Toribio Lopez; her older siblings, Santos Villareal and Chavel Lopez.
Lucia leaves to cherish her memory to her children, Lupe and husband Chuck Browning Chuck, Lucy and husband Julio Alarcon, Jinoeva and husband Trent Thurman, Amy and husband Sean Mohme, Alejandro Cuevas, Jr. and wife Wanda, and Abel Cuevas; her adoring grandchildren, whom she loved deeply, Venessa Silvia, Nathaniel Garcia, Neil Plumbley, Terrill Flen Plumbley, Brandi Camacho, Erika Cuevas, Alejandro “Tito” Cuevas III, Jose Luis Cuevas, Andrea Grille, Nicholas Cuevas, Robert Cuevas, and Toby Cuevas; her many great-grandchildren which were such a blessing to her; her brothers and sisters Francisco Lopez, Fale Soto, Toribio
