After recently discovering that cancer had invaded her lung and spread to her brain, Evelyn Irene Broadway of Elgin, Texas passed away at the age of seventy-eight on Thursday, May 5th, 2022, in the hospital.
Evelyn was born May 11, 1943, in Los Angeles, CA. She was baptized in March of 1953 and was always a believer in Jesus Christ her Savior. In her younger years, Evelyn was an athlete, spending most of her time skating when she was not in school or riding her bike with her little dog Janie who rode in the basket.
In 1960 Evelyn married Jim Broadway and worked with her father in his coin tube business as treasurer and served on the board. Later they moved to San Dimas, CA where they started their family, adopting their son Lee and adding a St Bernard puppy named Sammy to the family.
Unfortunately, Evelyn suffered from a stormy marriage so in 1969 she divorced. As a single mom, she moved to northern California and worked for Eaton Corporation while she raised her son. Once he was an adult on his own, she moved to Texas to start a new life.
Her life in Texas consisted of activities giving back to the community: Working as a CNA in care facilities and in private residence to care for those who were ill; doing volunteer work at the Elgin Cemetery; and working at the Elgin Veterinarian Hospital, as well as pet sitting for folks in the community. She was also a member of the Texas Racing Commission due to her work with breeding of racehorses.
On her land, Evelyn raised exotic birds, handled horses, and cared for their many other animals including donkeys, chickens, and her beloved Shepard’s plus a variety of small dogs. Evelyn never forgot the neighborhood dogs and cats, always leaving food out for them and carrying cookies in her work vest for them for when they came around.
Evelyn would agree with the ideals of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, "The animals of God's creation inhabit the skies, the earth and the sea. and have a part in human life. We, therefore, invoke God's blessing on these animals. over all the creatures of the earth."
Evelyn believed that the donkey was one of Gods sacred creatures because of the biblical role played in carrying Christ Jesus to His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, His fulfilling of scripture, and His resurrection.
Evelyn would come to be admired by many for her grit and her fortitude, conservative values, and her strength in the Lord which led her thru life.
Evelyn is survived by her son, Lee Broadway; her niece, Ruth, and husband Will Sharp; great niece, Jaclyn Sharp and Jaclyn’s husband Christopher; along with her loving friends of Elgin, Texas and elsewhere.
Family and friends will gather at Elgin Funeral Home Saturday, May 14th from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM with a Funeral Service beginning at 11:00 AM with Reverend, Hans Lillejord presiding. Interment will follow at Elgin Cemetery.
