Saturnina "Nina" Mendez Sauceda

We are sad to announce Saturnina “Nina” Mendez Sauceda, 99, of Austin, formerly of Elgin, passed away Friday, April 18, 2025.

At the age of 60, Nina took a bold step that would define her later years; she pursued her lifelong passion for healthcare and became a Certified Nursing Assistant. With dedication, she served in this role for 15 years before penning another chapter in her life at the IRS, where she brought her commitment and tenacity until her retirement at the venerated age of 92. Nina's zest for life was contagious. 

She reveled in the excitement of gambling, relishing every visit to the casino and the cherished family domino games filled with laughter and friendly wagers.  Her adventurous spirit led her across borders, domestically and internationally, crafting countless memories with her beloved sisters, daughters, sons, and grandchildren. Each trip was a new story, a new adventure, marked by an unbreakable bond of family and camaraderie. 

Nina was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, and their children, Theresa, Janie, Diane, and Joe. Nina is survived by her son, Mauricio, her grandson Robert—whom she raised from birth; her daughter, Olga and her husband Albert, her daughter Carolyn and her husband David, and her daughter Melinda and her husband Kevin. In addition to her immediate family, Nina leaves behind a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rest in peace, Nina; your light will forever shine. 

Family and Friends will gather for Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home, Tuesday, April 22nd from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and will Pray the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Christian Funeral Mass will be conducted at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Elgin, Wednesday, April 23rd at 10:00 a.m. with Father Paul presiding. Christian Burial will follow at Elgin Latin Cemetery.
