Mary L. Smith

Mary L. Smith, 95, of Round Rock, formerly of Elgin, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025. She was born on August 26, 1930, to the late O.J. and Margaret Wheat.

On December 7, 1974, Mary was united in marriage to Jim Smith, and together they shared 49 loving years of marriage. Mary enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as an executive secretary to the President of National Western Life, where she faithfully served for more than 20 years.

Mary found joy in spending time with her family, traveling with her husband in their travel trailer, and taking vacations abroad. Together, she and Jim were blessed to visit many destinations, including Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, and Japan.

She was preceded in death by her beloved “Sweets,” Jim Smith; her parents, O.J. and Margaret Wheat; and her siblings, her stepchildren, Jimmy Huston, Dennis Wayne Smith, and Patricia Lynn Henning; Beatrice Wheat and O.J. Wheat Jr.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Diane Stacks; her son, Larry Stacks, and his wife, Diane; her stepchildren, Randy Smith and his wife, Patti, and Pam Kovar and her husband, Steven; as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Family and Friends will gather for a Memorial Service to Celebrate a Life, at Elgin Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 8th at 2:00 PM, with Pastor Dwight Reagan presiding. Interment will be private.
