Manuel Castañeda, de 69 años, falleció pacíficamente en su hogar el 20 de mayo de 2025. También le sobreviven sus hermanas: Imelda Castañeda, Enedelia Castañeda, Aida Castañeda, Leticia Castañeda Salazar y Patricia Castañeda; y sus hermanos: Armando, Arnoldo, Jorge, Alberto y Alfredo Castañeda. Le precedieron en la muerte su padre, Daniel Castañeda; su madre, Leonor Castañeda; sus hermanos: Javier y Daniel Jr.; su hermana Diana Castañeda; y su nieto David Samuel Medina. Conocido cariñosamente como “Meme,” Manuel provenía de una familia de trabajadores migrantes y él mismo trabajó en el campo desde joven. Manuel y Juana se mudaron al área de Austin con sus tres hijos pequeños en busca de una vida mejor. Su hijo menor nació más tarde en Austin.

Después de mudarse a Austin, Manuel conoció las creencias de los Testigos de Jehová. Aunque no se bautizó formalmente, nunca se opuso a que su familia practicara la fe. Recibió estudios bíblicos para tener una comprensión más profunda de las Escrituras y disfrutaba cuando sus amigos lo visitaban para leer la Biblia con él. Uno de sus textos favoritos era Juan 17:3: “Esto significa vida eterna: que lleguen a conocerte a ti, el único Dios verdadero, y a quien tú enviaste, Jesucristo.”

Manuel sentía una gran pasión por la jardinería y por trabajar con autos. Tenía un don para los números—podía resolver problemas matemáticos mentalmente sin usar los dedos (una habilidad que, según bromeaban sus hijos, no heredaron). Tenía tan buena mano para las plantas que podía hacer crecer un árbol a partir de una simple rama.

Era un hombre muy entregado a su familia y le encantaba crear recuerdos con sus nietos. A menudo los llevaba a los eventos de su trabajo para que ellos también disfrutaran. También disfrutaba hacer viajes espontáneos a San Antonio, pasear en lancha por el River Walk y comer tacos callejeros en el Mercado.

Su sabiduría tranquila, su ingenio y su humor amable dejaron una huella duradera en todos los que lo conocieron.

Manuel Castañeda, age 69, passed away peacefully at his home on May 20, 2025. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Juana Castañeda; daughters, Maribel Vasquez and Lupita Medina; sons, Juan Manuel and Carlos Castañeda; grandchildren, Karina Mendoza, Briana Vasquez, Anthony, Kayla, Mike Medina, and Nicholas Botello; and great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Madelline Mendoza, Galilea Cortez, Malekhai, Layla, Matheo, Mikah Neal, and Addelyn Botello.

He is also survived by his sisters: Imelda Castañeda, Enedelia Castañeda, Aida Castañeda, Leticia Castañeda Salazar, and Patricia Castañeda; and brothers: Armando, Arnoldo, Jorge, Alberto, and Alfredo Castañeda. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Castañeda; mother, Leonor Castañeda; brothers: Javier and Daniel Jr.; sister Diana Castañeda; and grandson David Samuel Medina. He leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.

Known affectionately as “Meme,” Manuel came from a family of migrant workers and followed in their footsteps, working the fields himself. He met the love of his life, Juana, while riding his bike through the “hielera” neighborhood in Edinburg, TX. He spotted a beautiful young woman doing cartwheels in front of her house—Juana—and the two soon began exchanging letters. The rest was history.

Manuel and Juana eventually moved to the Austin area with their three young children in search of a better life. Their youngest child was later born in Austin.

After moving to Austin, Manuel was introduced to the beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Though he did not make the truth his own through baptism, he never opposed his family’s practice of it. He studied the Bible to gain a fuller understanding of the scriptures and enjoyed visits from friends who read with him. During difficult times in his health, he always put Jehovah first when making medical decisions. He loved Jehovah until his last breath.

One of his favorite scriptures was John 17:3: “This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.”

Manuel had a passion for gardening and working on cars. He had a gift for numbers—able to solve math problems in his head without using his fingers (a skill his children often joked they didn’t inherit). He had a green thumb and could grow a tree from a branch.

He was a deeply family-oriented man who loved making memories with his grandchildren. He often brought them along to his employer’s events so they could share in the experience. He also enjoyed spontaneous trips to San Antonio, riding the boats along the River Walk, and eating street tacos at Market Square.

His quiet wisdom, resourcefulness, and gentle humor left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

He will be remembered for his love of family, his strong work ethic, and the deep roots he planted in the lives of those around him.

Manuel Castaneda falleció en su casa el 20 de mayo de 2025, con su esposa, Juana, y su familia a su lado. La familia recibirá a los invitados en la Funeraria Elgin, el viernes 23 de mayo, de 5:00 p.m. a 7:00 p.m. con una celebración de la vida de Manuel a las 7:00 p.m. en la Capilla Williams Memorial en la Funeraria Elgin, presidida por el pastor Jaime Vásquez, de la Congregación de los Testigos de Jehová en Lexington. El entierro será privado.

Manuel Castaneda passed away at home on May 20, 2025, with his wife, Juana, and family at his bedside. Family will receive guests at Elgin Funeral Home, Friday, May 23rd, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a Celebration of Manuel's Life to follow at 7:00 PM in the Williams Memorial Chapel in Elgin Funeral Home, with Pastor Jaime Vasquez, of Jehovah's Witness Lexington Congregation, presiding. Interment will be private.
