Listen to Obituary

James Washington, a lifetime resident of Bastrop (Shiloh Community), affectionately known to his children as “Pops”, to his family as “Little Son” and to many others as “Wash Pot” or “Tender”, has laid his boots to rest.

Born on July 3, 1946, to Johnas and Johnnie Mae Washington, James was the baby of the family. He grew up in Bastrop County, where he attended public schools and was raised with a Christian foundation. He professed his belief in Christ at an early age.

James was an avid outdoorsman who loved riding horses, fishing, and hunting. He began his career in construction at a young age and later became a respected foreman. He was well known throughout the Shiloh Community, and most of the evening, you could find him on the porch sipping on a cold Coca-Cola and scratching lottery tickets with his dog Spike sitting at his feet. James was a humorous and easygoing person. Whether with family, friends, or neighbors, he left a lasting impression on those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a man of few words, but many actions, and his actions often spoke louder than his words.

On May 5, 1970, James was united in holy matrimony to Imogene McDonald. To this union, they were blessed with three children. James is preceded in death by his parents, Johnas and Johnnie Mae Washington; two brothers, Arthur Benford and Henry Washington; and three sisters, Mattie Grant, Florida Earl, and Francie Mae Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Imogene Washington of Cedar Creek, his daughters, Jacqualine Moore (Eugene) of Del Valle, Veronica Coto of Dallas, and Beverly Hubbard (Anthony) of Cedar Creek; his son, Daniel Washington (Gracie) of Utley; and one sister, Mollie Fowler of Bastrop.

His legacy continues through fifteen grandchildren: DaNecia Jackson, Devin Brown, Brandon Moore, Damarcus Washington, Robert Washington, Dasha Washington, Nastassia Thomas, Anthony Hubbard Jr., Jasmyne Hubbard, Khari Simmons, Jasmine Washington, Bryson Moore, Mycha Moore, Kierra Washington, and Nevah Joyner; and nine great-grandchildren: Jaylan Roberson, Jermaine Roberson Jr., Kay’Brien Flot, Zya Brown, Desmen Dunson, Miyanae Marshall, Amareah Washington, Ariel Moore, and Journee Roberson.

He is also remembered by a close friend, Sarah Schiller, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. James Washington will be deeply missed by many, but his presence will continue to live on in the hearts of his family.

Family and Friends will gather for the Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home on Thursday, August 28th, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. A Home-Going Celebration will be held at Elgin Funeral Home on Friday, August 29th, at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Colorado Chapel Cemetery.
