The Life of Evey Williams
Evey Francis Williams, a respected member of the Elgin, Texas community, was called home by her Heavenly Father on May 8, 2025. She was born February 26, 1934, in Giddings, Texas, to Alton McCullough and Willie McCullough.
Evey joined Elgin Church of Christ, where she accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized. Evey attended the public schools of Giddings ISD. Evey left school before graduating to go to work.
Working since she was a young lady, one of her first jobs was with Jack Anderson as a housekeeper. With some experience, she was hired at Travis State School, where she remained for 25 years. Always being a hard worker, Evey joined the Elgin ISD staff as a cafeteria cook. There she remained until retirement time at 22 years, still not ready for retirement. Evey took on part-time work in the Home Health industry.
Evey was united in Holy Matrimony to JD Williams, and this union was blessed with nine children, three boys and six girls.
In her late twenties, Evey joined the Morning Star Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Taylor, Texas. She journeyed through the labyrinth, learning about the light. In 1997, Evey and eleven Christian ladies under the leadership of the late Brother Ira Bell worked and organized a new chapter for the district, with the late Sister Bobbie Moore serving as Matron. Their name “Sunshine Chapter # 337” fit the ladies well, for they all shone a big, bright smile. After sinking more light, the group merged with Rising Star Chapter Number 334 of Bastrop, Texas, under the leadership of Sister Gwendolyn Johnson. Sister Evey grew with the light and journeyed with her sister-in-law, the late Sister Annie McNeal; they were joined at the hips, traveling near and far, supporting the district and the state, including the Brothers of the Craft. Sister Evey utilized inspiring Biblical examples of good conduct and moral values and was dedicated to charity, truth, and loving kindness by uplifting others.
Evey most valuable time was when she was able to sit and read her bible and read the Elgin Courier, keeping up with her faith and the local news of the town.
Evey was a very sweet and caring person who treated no one like a stranger and treated everyone the same way, showing she was the “fairest among a thousand, all together lovely.”
Evey favorite sports teams were the Elgin Wildcats and the Dallas Cowboys, which she was a huge fan of the two. She enjoyed playing dominoes, cooking, camping, and traveling on a bus to casinos with Mrs. Rose Clemons and friends, mainly for the buffet, but she enjoyed most of all supporting and spending time with her family. She loved the good laughter.
Evey was preceded in death by her parents Alton and Willie McCullough, five brothers-Otis Francis, David McCullough, Quentin McCullough, DC McCullough and Willie McCullough Jr, one sister-Luella Cook, one daughter, Mae Pearl Williams, one son, Ray Charles Williams, and the father of her children, JD Williams.
Evey built a legacy that will be forever cherished by her seven children, Evelyn Thomas, Larry Williams (LaDonna), Jeanette Clark (Michael), Lesia Jones, Deddra, ‘Debra’ Williams, Muriel Williams (Teddy), and Kenneth Williams (Meredith); nineteen grandchildren, twenty-one great- grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; her two sisters, Ceolia Smith and Ruthie Shackles and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, and certainly the Church of Christ of Elgin family.
