Listen to Obituary

Beyond life’s golden sunset lies a city bright and fair;

In the land of God’s tomorrow, our loved ones await us there

It’s a place of wondrous beauty where they know not grief or fear

When God himself in tenderness

Wipe away all tears…

Eldin Thomas Phillips, a resident of Elgin, Texas, was born in Taylor, Texas, on January 16, 1945, to McKinley Thomas and Sarah Harris. Eldin grew up on the dusky streets of Taylor and Elgin, attending Booker T. Washington High School, and graduated in 1964. She was baptized at an early age. She attended Mount Carmel Baptist Church under the late Reverend Q. S. Goins. As she furthered her education, she attended Texas Southern College in Houston, Texas, before landing a job with the US Postal Service in Dallas, Texas. Eldin retired after about twenty-two years as a mail clerk.

Eldin was united in Holy Matrimony to Averitt Phillips, and they were blessed with two children, Averitt, Jr, and Theresa.

Eldin was a happy woman, full of life. She enjoyed her children playing table games such as Monopoly. She was blessed with friends who cared about her, and she cared about them in return. Bingo was her favorite entertainment. Eldin often visited Mount Moriah Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend L. R. White to hear him sing.

As life moved forward and came to an end, she married Louis Washington, and their bond was special until his death. She cared and loved with passion and true concern for all.

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning!

Eldin was called from labor to rest at the age of 80, on November 15, 2025. She is preceded in death by her husband, Louis Washington, the father of her children, Averitt Phillips, Sr., her parents, and all of her siblings.

Eldin leaves a priceless legacy to be cherished by her children, Averitt Phillips, Jr., of Elgin, and Thersa Phillips of Austin, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, along with many other relatives and friends.

Family and Friends will gather for Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home on Monday, November 24th, from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM. A Home-Going Celebration will follow at 1:00 PM with Reverend L. R. Wilson, Sr., presiding. Interment will be at the Colorado Chapel Cemetery.
