Doris Jean Young, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas.
Doris Jean was born in Cedar Creek, Texas, on May 18, 1949, to the parents of Eldridge and Ora Harris. She was the first of seven children. Doris Jean attended elementary school in Bastrop, Texas. Doris Jean would be in the first integrated class to graduate from Bastrop High School in 1967. After graduating from high school, Doris Jean would move to Berkley, California. There she would live with her Aunt Joyce and soon found employment with California Blue Shield Insurance Company. Doris would work there for many years until the company went out of business.
After moving to Berkley, California, she met and married Charles Young in 1969. To this union, one son was born, Damien. Doris would also become a loving mother to two beautiful children, Craig and Adrian, whom she loved very much and considered her own. After the insurance company closed, Doris then decided to continue her education by going to college and onto Nursing School. Doris pursued her degree with excellence while still being a loving wife and mother. Doris would graduate from Nursing School in June of 1987. She was so proud when her grandparents, C.L. and Amanda Jones, flew out to California to attend her graduation. It meant so much to her to have them there because they were an integral part of her growing up, and that would be the first time her grandfather had ever flown on a plane. After working as a nurse for a few years, Doris went back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner. After achieving this certification, Doris would move to Sacramento, California, to take a position as a Nurse Practitioner for Sacramento County. During this time, Doris was also active in the Black Nurses Association. Doris worked for Sacramento County until she retired.
Doris professed a hope in Christ at an early age. She would attend various churches around Central Texas with her parents. When Doris moved to California, she united with the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland, California, where she sang in the choir. Later, she would unite with the Church of God in Christ.
Doris retired from Nurse Practitioner and moved back to Texas, actually to Converse, Texas, a suburb of San Antonio. In Converse, she would spend time with her “Bestie,” Audrey. Doris Jean would also take part in many family events now that she was closer to the Texas part of her family. Doris Jean would live in Converse until she passed from this earth.
