Dorothy Johnson

October 27, 1925 — December 3, 2017

The battle is over, I have fought a good fight, and the victory is finally won. No more suffering and pain, I have much more to gain. I heard the heavenly angelic choir singing as it drew near the hour. When the pearly gates open,

I could see

Mrs. Dorothy Mae Johnson , a long life-time resident of Barrett, Texas and on December 3, 2017, the community began to mourn the passing of a strong woman who maintained dignity womanhood while facing life’s trials and triumphs.

Dorothy was born to Ed Parish and Pearl Butler on October 27, 1925 in Brenham, Texas, a little girl to five boys. She attended the public schools of Washington County. Dorothy lost her Mother at the age of seven, which brought a change to her and her baby brother, Freddy. They were raised in Elgin Texas by her mother’s brother, Sam Butler and his wife, Emma and children, Cleora, Lucious, Hugh Lucious and Mary.

“A Time To Plant”

Growing up on the hill, in a strong Christian foundation, Dorothy professed a belief in Christ at an early age. She renewed her relationship with Christ and worked faithfully at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend G. S. Matthews. Serving on the usher board, Dorothy took a stand in church, working in and out of season, exemplifying what it meant to be a God fearing woman.

In 1941, upon returning to Brenham, Dorothy married Hewitt Phillips and God entrusted her with two boys, Hewitt, Jr. and Howard.

On January 27, 1947, Dorothy was united in Holy Matrimony to Homer Johnson and they shared sixty-four years of marriage before his passing in 2011. Their love and bond were inseparable, her name became Mrs. Homer .

“A Time To Play and Work”

Mrs. Dorothy led an active and fulfilling life, dedicating her time to her grandchildren whom she loved dearly. In fact, Granny had so much love for grandchildren; she stepped up and proclaimed others to be hers as well. In fact, Granny love was irresistible, everyone wanted her to be their Gee Gee.

Mama thanked God daily for blessing her to live and see your girls grow to adulthood. She prayed to live for her grandchildren. But when the little GGs started to come, she said she was not going to worry God to live for them, but ask God to bless the family to stay together and help each other. Mama was very proud of her five generations.

Mama served as PTA mom, band mom, classroom mom, cheerleader mom, car pool mom, and a camp mom. As the family grew she was a babysitter, full time after school picker upper and dinner feeder. Mama served as Grandmother for several classes. When she stopped driving, she made sure somebody was there for the Grands then the little GG’s. Mama remained the after school drop off until her death. No longer able to go outside, she watched the clock and the back door until they were all accounted for. Her favorite ‘spend’ day was the trips to the Casino with her girls. She would spend hours on her machine, winning or not.

“A Time To Die”

Mrs. Dorothy led an active and fulfilling life for this legacy she established is endless. This occasion has caused many hearts to bleed and many eyes to water because of having to bid “adieu” to a Mother, Granny, Gee Gee, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Friend – OUR MOMMA – will be truly missed! Momma is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, son, Hewitt, Jr. daughter, La-Barbera, two grandchildren, (infants) Stephanie and Howard, II, and all her siblings and in-laws. Yes, she was the last of her generation. She stayed thirty-nine until the government revealed her birthday as August 28, 1924.

“A Time To Celebrate”

After seeing five generations, Gee Gee lived a thankful enriched life and her legacy will be long remembered by her son, Howard Phillips and his wife, Shirley; three daughters, Jacqueline Tompkins, Billie Alfred, Gwendolyn Johnson and one God Child, Bobbie Yarbrough; She also leaves behind seventeen grandchildren, forty great grandchildren, three God grandchildren, one great God grandchild, and one great, great grandchild, Zalaya; nieces and nephews covering four generations, with five generations of cousins and other relatives and friends. Granny will also be missed by a multitude of community children and their children.

“Momma rest, take your rest….”
