Donald Joe Scott was born on January 8th, 1939, at home on Scott Hill near McDade, Texas, to Grover Cleveland Scott and Ina Fay Allen Scott. He was the seventh of nine children.
Donald grew up and attended school in Elgin, Texas. As a youth, he enjoyed swimming at Scott Falls, coon and squirrel hunting, and fishing. He enjoyed playing sports at Elgin High School and lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track. While in high school, he worked at Blackstock Texaco and graduated in 1958. Donald also enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard Reserves, serving for eight years until 1966.
After high school, he worked a variety of jobs, including at Anderson Construction, driving an earthmover during the construction of the Summerville Dam, and eventually becoming a machinist at Reinhart Company, Texas Nuclear, and the University of Texas.
Donald married Paula Jane Swanzy in 1969 and raised two sons, Jeff and Eddy. As a young adult, he enjoyed going to the lake, water skiing with family and friends. He developed a lifelong passion for hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling. His competitive spirit continued in playing dominoes, horseshoes, shooting pool, and pitching washers.
Donald Joe Scott passed on December 26, 2025, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 86 years, 11 months. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Ina Scott, spouse Paula Scott, and siblings Abner, Dan, Mary Lou, Harlan, and Shirley.
Donald Joe is survived by his sons, Jeff and Eddy, his grandsons, Tyler and Daryl (Reed), and his siblings, Lee, Allen, and Joe. As well as numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Family and Friends will gather for a Visitation from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Elgin Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. A Celebration of Donald Joe's Life at Elgin Funeral Home will follow at 12:00 PM. The interment is to follow at Youngs Prairie Cemetery.
