Lola Swain Scroggins

February 12, 1942 ~ November 30, 2018 (age 76)

Lola S. Scroggins was born in Elgin, Texas on February 12, 1942, to the late William Russell and Pearline (Penson) Marine Russell.  Lola entered a religious covenant with God at an early age where she kept her faith until death.  Lola attended the public schools in Elgin.  Pursuing her desire to further her education, Lola attended college at Huston-Tillotson College and Prairie View University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master’s Degree, respectively.  Lola worked in the school system, teaching for several school districts, beginning with Austin Independent School District. She settled down in San Antonio, with her family.  Stepping out on faith, Lola went to Saint Mary University and earned her Doctrine Degree in Education.  Lola was a dedicated strong teacher, witnessing many changes by the state before retiring after thirty-five years.

Waiting in heaven for Lola is her husband, John Scroggins, Sr.; her parents, and two sisters, Ruth Alice and Wyetta.

Lola leaves a priceless legacy to be cherished by her only child, John Scroggins, Jr. of Mansfield, Texas; three grandchildren:  Jonathan Scroggins of San Antonio, Texas; Latasha Renee Scroggins of Austin, Texas and Jonathan Nickerson of Austin, Texas; three brothers, Lenvoll ‘Sonny’ Mackey of Temple; William ‘Shorty’ Russell of Elgin, and Larry ‘Hollywood’ Russell of Mansfield; and a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive guests at the Elgin Funeral Home on Friday, December 7th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A Home Going Celebration will be conducted at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, December 8th at 11:00 AM with Reverend Steven Ward Presiding. Interment will follow at Littig Cemetery.

Now her work is ended
And she is laid to rest,
I seem to hear her whisper,
O’Lord, I’ve done my best!
Well done my faithful servant
I know you’ve struggled hard
That’s why I thought to call you
From labor to rest…
