October 11, 1961 — October 24, 2018

Psalm 100 King James Version (KJV)

100 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.

2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Life Epitome

O n the twenty-fourth day of October 2018 at 12:16 AM, Keith Selwyn Kerl, went to join the Savior in that home not built with hands, but whose maker and builder is God.

On October 11, 1961 to the proud parents, Abrum Kerl and Dorothy Lee Kerl, welcomed a bundle of joy and was given the name Keith Selwyn . Keith applied himself to learning as he attended schools in the Crosby Independent School District. He graduated from Crosby High School in 1979.

Keith grew up with a strong family, Christian foundation, and was baptized at an early age, by the late Reverend G. S. Matthew and united with the family church, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Barrett Station. Keith was a very active young man in the church, gaining the love and respect of all.

As a young child, Keith would sit and watch his Aunt Faye, who was the musician of the Church, play the piano while his Mother would sing. His fascination with her skills, gave him a solid foundation in playing the piano and leading a singing choir. His love for singing and playing the piano and organ, took him in many directions, always keeping him in church, heightening his musical talent, which was his spiritual GIFT from God.

Keith’s journey of life began over forty-one years ago as he shared his gift of music ministry. One of his first church was Truevine Missionary Baptist Church followed by Shiloh and then First Baptist. As he grew, and his talent was in high demand, he landed a job at Greater Star, then served at Groveland Church in Houston, Texas. Continuing to grow and following the light, Keith moved to Austin, Texas. He church hopped through Emanuel, Antioch, New Light Ebenezer and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church before planting a seed at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist of Elgin, Texas in 2004. He loved them, and they loved him. He continued to share his gift of music as the choir grew. He served under the late Reverend QS Goins and the present Pastor, Reverend Byron Green, until health began to fail. He was well known in the community and served often when called upon. On September of 2018, Keith played his final request and did it with gusto and enthusiasm. “Well done good and faithful servant”… His legacy through music minister is priceless!

Keith is preceded in death by his father, Abrum Kerl and his mother, Dorothy Lee Rue and his grandparents, fraternal and maternal.

Keith was blessed with fifty - seven years and he leaves in God’s hands to cherish his memories two brothers, Karl Cedric Godfrey and Kaylan Sean Kerl; stepfather, George Rue; Godmother, Gwendolyn Polk; and Goddaughters Tyvisha Pierce, Nandi Dechon and Najee Dechelle Polk; aunts, Erline Drenon, Gloria and husband, Silas Wooten; Delores Faye Godfrey; uncles, Hershey Godfrey and wife, Jackie, Reverend Frank Carter and wife, Bettye; and a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends, including the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church family and many musicians.
