Dorothy "Dottie" Peterson Nitkin

April 8, 1936 — June 2, 2019

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our loving mother. Dottie Peterson Nitkin left us peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family. Dottie Nitkin, 83, of Elgin died Sunday, June 2, 2019.  Dottie was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 8, 1936. She was raised in the Grayling and Bay City areas of Michigan, but spent most of her life in Austin and Elgin.  Dottie was an avid reader and had a passion for sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and gardening. She enjoyed bowling and felt closest to God while fishing with her beloved Donald. During her lifetime she held various positions with many businesses, such as Capital City Trade and Technical School, Austin Physical Therapy Clinic, and Ed Warren Insurance Agency.  However, her greatest joy in life was raising a family and loving them beyond measure.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Aletha Parkinson; her sister, Ruth Riddle; her husband's Herbert Nitkin and Lambert “Donald” Peterson; and her beloved grandson Edward “Moose” Ortiz, Jr.

She is survived by her five children, Jackie and husband Dale Davis of Austin, Kim Loyola of Kyle, Debbie and husband Jesse Maxwell of Brownwood, John Witbrodt of Elgin, and Marcia and husband Jim McMillan of Elgin; and their father, Retired Major Donald J. Witbrodt; eight sisters, Lela Binnall-Krohn, Ethel Vaughn, Ellen Steinhoff, Claudette Mogle, Beverly Brado, Heather Gedye, Renee Thomas, and Barbara Miller.  Dottie was lovingly known as “Grammie” and is survived by her nine grandchildren, Cathy Ortiz-Wilson, Jason Crim, Jeff Crim, Alicia Leach, Lindsay Barnum, Justin Witbrodt, Kyle Gilmore, Shelby Jackson, and Anthony Loyola. Her legacy of love continues on and includes twenty-one great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to her chosen charity, The American Cancer Society.

Family and friends will gather at the Elgin Funeral Home on Saturday, June 8th at 10:00 AM.  A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Sam Brannon presiding.  She will be laid to rest at the Lund Cemetery.
